The essential five food groups

There are five major food groups which a healthy balance between them is essential for a healthy balanced diet.

1.Fruit and Vegetables

We should eat at least five portions of fruit and vegetables each day. They give us the much needed fibre, vitamins and minerals.

2.Dairy

Dairy helps provides us with the calcium we need to help our bones grow strong. Important for growing children. Ensure you and your child have between two to four servings from the dairy food group.

3.Meat and Protein

You should eat two to three portions of this foodgroup should each day. This food group includes fish, meat, poultry, dry beans, nuts and eggs. This food group provides our body with iron, zinc, and proteins.

4.Fats, Oils and Sweets

This food group doesn't provide much nuitrition for our body, so eating too much of this food group should be avoided.

5.Grain

Rice, cereal and pasta belong in this food group, and this is the group that we should eat the most of. We should eat between six to eleven servings from this food group each day. They provide us with carbohydrates which provide us with energy.
